SCCA Announces Membership Drive Contest

The 2010 SCCA National Convention was attended by over 450 members. For the other 99% of our members that were unable to make the trip to Las Vegas this year, we announced some changes to our 2010 Membership Programs and kicked off our 2010 Membership Drive Contest!

For starters, workers completing 12+ days this membership year will receive a $45 discount on their membership dues (up from $30 in 2009). We are also investigating adding Professional Series race days as being eligible towards days worked.

Next, effective April 1, 2010, Spouse dues will be combined into a Family Membership. The Family Membership will be reduced to $85 (from $101 in 2009). This will provide a savings of $3 for those couples that were Individual/Spouse combination members in 2009. The Individual and Spouse member will each retain their current membership number.

And finally, we launched the 2010 Membership Drive Contest. As part of this contest, the referring member discount will increase from $5 to $10. The $10 may be applied towards your membership dues or used for purchase of SCCA merchandise or event entry fees (National Office conducted events only). The second part of the contest is that for each member you refer, your name will be entered into a Grand Prize Drawing. The more referrals, the more drawing entries.

1st Place - Skip Barber Racing School
2nd Place - $1,500 Tire RackŪ Gift Certificate
3rd Place - $500 SCCA Merchandise Gift Certificate

Full details of the 2010 Membership Drive Contest and 2010 Membership Programs can be found here.

We are in the process of finalizing all of the details that happen behind the scenes that make these programs available, so if you have any questions please feel free to contact us via phone or email at membership@scca.com or insideline@scca.com.

Wannarka

TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 9, 2009) – In its final meeting of 2009, the Sports Car Club of America Board of Directors selected Jerry Wannarka, of Glenwood, Md., as its chairman for 2010. The Board also approved appointments for the various SCCA boards and committees that will govern the organization throughout 2010.

A Washington DC Region member currently in his third year as the Director for Area Two, Wannarka’s interest in motorsports began with autocrossing, rallies and ice racing in Minnesota. He has also been heavily involved behind the scenes, stewarding since the 1980’s, serving on the DC Region Board of Directors and most recently acting as Secretary for the SCCA BOD in 2009.

After retiring from the Army at the rank of Colonel, he held positions at the Vice President and Senior Vice President level with several pharmaceutical companies.  He is currently a consultant to the pharmaceutical industry.

SCCA Announces 2010 Hall of Fame Class

TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 1, 2009) - Sports Car Club of America has revealed the names of the five individuals who will be inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame at the 2010 SCCA National Convention. The distinguished group includes: Nick Craw, Briggs Cunningham, R. David Jones, Berdie Martin and Wayne Zitkus.

The SCCA National Hall of Fame was created in 2004 to preserve, protect and record the history and accomplishments of the Club by acknowledging those members who’ve made a significant impact on the development of the SCCA, be it through service to the national organization, achievements in national competition or brining national recognition to SCCA. Nominations were submitted to and reviewed by the Hall of Fame Nomination and Selection Committees. Of the nominated individuals, five were selected for the 2010 Class.

Serving as SCCA President for 17 years, Nick Craw was the longest serving SCCA President in Club history by more than a decade. During his tenure, SCCA experienced its greatest period of growth, as membership doubled and revenue increased by more than 500 percent. Craw oversaw the creation of SCCA Club Racing’s most popular class, Spec Racer Ford, and implemented an industry-leading insurance plan for race workers and drivers. The opinion of the membership was important to Craw; he regularly conducted surveys and interacted with members on the grassroots level, taking his race car on a tour of SCCA Club Races and challenging members to “Beat the Boss.” Recognizing that SCCA was too big to be just a club, but tied too strongly to its roots to be just a business, Craw pushed SCCA to become a stronger club, run with sound business practices. Today, Craw’s foresight is being put to use as the head of the Automobile Competition Club of the United States (ACCUS), where he represents American racing interests at the international level.

Briggs Cunningham is already recognized by several motorsports hall of fames and now joins his SCCA contemporaries John Fitch, Cameron Argetsinger and Bill Milliken in the SCCA Hall of Fame. Cunningham competed in SCCA’s very first road race at Watkins Glen in 1948 and continued to have an illustrious racing career that spanned 25 years. He was best known as the first man to assemble a team of American cars with American drivers that was capable of challenging Europeans on the international circuit. The most successful cars in Cunningham’s stable were those that bore his own name. Cunningham was also an accomplished sailor, serving as captain on the Columbia in 1958 when it won the America’s Cup. Cunningham was a past recipient of SCCA’s highest honor, the Woolf Barnato Award.

Another Woolf Barnato Award winner in the crowd of inductees is R. David Jones, whose 50-plus year membership in SCCA began while he was in quest of a drag race. When Jones arrived at Eagle Moutain Air Base in Texas, there was no drag racing, but rather an SCCA event. Not deterred, Jones stuck around to volunteer and was hooked. Volunteering led to crewing and crewing to driving, all while Jones became more involved in the operation of his local region. Racing in Formula Vee and holding a variety of Divisional positions, Jones was eventually elected to the Board of Directors, where he would serve as Chairman for a record seven years. Those years were some of the most turbulent in Club history, with the creation of Spec Racer Ford and the purchase of Pro-Solo by SCCA. Jones continues to race today in Formula Mazda and serve as a race steward. He was recently elected to another term on the SCCA Board of Directors.

Burdette “Berdie” Martin is credited with making SCCA a powerful force on the American professional racing scene. Another Woolf Barnato Award winner, Martin was a mentor to a generation of race stewards by setting an example of professionalism and teamwork. He served as the Chief Steward of the Unites States Grand Prix and SCCA’s two most successful racing series, Can-Am and Trans-Am, before being named Director of SCCA Pro Racing. After seeing SCCA Pro Racing through a fruitful era of expansion, Martin went on to head ACCUS and became one of the most recognizable American faces within international racing circles.

Though he has not actively competed for the last 25 years, Wayne Zitkus remains sixth in lifetime RoadRally points. His rallying career began in 1962 with road rallies, before expanding his participation to Performance Rally. After chairing numerous National and Divisional rallies he was named Chairman of the Road Rally Board. The SCCA ProRally series was created during his tenure. Zitkus was elected to the SCCA Board of Directors and served the club as treasurer. Even after his elected term had expired, so esteemed was he in his position, that Zitkus was asked to stay on as treasurer. His induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame completes a long list of SCCA accolades, which include both the Arthur Gervais and Robert Ridges Award for rallying and the Woolf Barnato Award for outstanding contributions to the club.

Craw, Cunningham, Jones, Martin and Zitkus will be inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame at the 2010 SCCA National Convention in Las Vegas. The ceremony is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. (PST), Saturday, Jan. 30, at the South Point Hotel and Casino.

The five inductees will join the five previous classes, including:

2005: Cameron Argetsinger, A. Tracy Bird, John Fitch, Arthur Gervais, Harry Handley, Vern Jaques, Bill Milliken, Sue Roethel, Art Trier and Rob Walker.

2006: John Bornholdt, John Buffum, Mark Donohue, Denise McCluggage and Grant Reynolds.

2007: Marge Binks, Marc Gerstein, Carl A. Haas, General Curtis E. LeMay, and Theodore F. Robertson.

2008: Roger E. Johnson, Don and Ruth Nixon, Kjell Qvale, Robert Ridges and Fred Schmucker.

2009: Bill Chambres, Bill Johnson, Kim Kimberly, Paul Newman and John Timanus

2010 NEDiv Council

For 2010, the NEDiv Council has a new Chairman and Secretary. Dave Panas, outgoing NEDiv Chairman, congratulated Tom Campbell for his election as NEDiv Council Chairman. Dave indicated that, while he would be Member-At-Large and still be involved in the Division, he had other interests he wanted to pursue. Kathy McLeod, NEDiv Secretary with 24 years of service to the Council, also indicated a desire to pursue other interests, and Sandy Sanders was elected NEDiv Council Secretary. Welcome to Tom as new Chairman and Sandy as new Secretary.

iRacing.com Named Official Motorsport Simulation of SCCA

iRacing
Program Includes Big Discounts for All SCCA Members and Contingency Awards for Club Racing and Solo

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 7, 2009) – Sports Car Club of America, Inc. and iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations, LLC have jointly announced a multi-year partnership naming iRacing.com the “Official Motorsport Simulation of SCCA.” As part of the overall partnership, iRacing.com has also introduced the SCCA Spec Racer Ford to its service.

The partnership includes reciprocal marketing initiatives to promote both companies as well as a robust contingency program for SCCA Club Racing and Tire RackŪ SCCA National Solo events.

“We’ve been working with iRacing.com since before the product was publicly launched and feel that it is the best simulator for driver training and the best value available,” SCCA VP of Marketing & Communications Eric Prill said. “Not only are there organized racing series that subscribers can join and participate in for a Championship, but there is unlimited testing time with any of the cars and tracks offered, including this year’s National Championship Runoffs venue—Road America.”

“We’re looking forward to building on the iRacing Cup contingency program that we initiated last year with SCCA and excited that now everyone who is a member of SCCA, plus their friends and families, will all have the opportunity to find out how much fun it is to get behind the wheel of the Spec Racer Ford,” said Scott McKee, iRacing’s vice president of marketing and in his spare time a Spec Racer Ford driver. “We know that because of financial and time constraints, a lot of people who would like to go racing in the physical world cannot; iRacing provides an exciting and enjoyable racing experience for just about everyone with a PC, a broadband connection and an inexpensive wheel-and-pedal set.”

As part of the partnership, SCCA members can take advantage of a special annual rate of $75.00 to new iRacing subscribers, a more than 50 percent discount on the regular $156.00 price of a full-year subscription. Members interested in taking advantage of the discount should e-mail their name and SCCA membership number as it appears on their membership card to scca@iracing.com.

The 2009 contingency program provides any registered participant finishing in the top three of a Club Racing Regional or National event or in a Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Tour or ProSolo event and displaying the iRacing decal on his or her car a free one-month subscription to the iRacing service. Existing iRacing members will receive a $15.00 credit to their iRacing.com account that can be used toward extending their membership or acquiring new cars or tracks from the service. Full details of the contingency program, which will begin with events held the May 30-31 weekend, will be available on SCCA.com soon.

The SCCA Spec Racer Ford was unveiled as part of the basic subscription package in late April. Now all iRacing.com drivers, from novice to expert, will have a Spec Racer Ford in their virtual garage to race at any time.

“We’re very excited that the Spec Racer Ford has come online with iRacing.com,” SCCA Enterprises President Erik Skirmants said. “Not only will SCCA drivers be able to practice for upcoming events, including the Runoffs, through iRacing.com, but current, non-SCCA members will have the opportunity to race the Spec Racer Ford as well. And non-racers who have run the car in the virtual world with iRacing.com now have a real-world, cost-effective opportunity to try wheel-to-wheel racing through one of many Customer Service Representative rental programs.”

iRacing.com exists to create the world's most authentic racing simulations, enable and organize real-time, online racing and advance and expand motorsport. The company invents and provides the tools and environment to enhance the skills of racers — novices to experts — around the world, deepening their understanding and enjoyment of the sport.

Proprietary technology assures that iRacing.com simulations deliver unprecedented accuracy of track replication and vehicle-handling dynamics. With curbing, cracks, patches and other trackside features recreated with precision measured in millimeters, and a physics engine and tire model that reproduce the feel of each particular car with absolute fidelity, the result is an experience so authentic that professional racers and experienced amateurs can hone their skills prior to on-track competition or testing.

Since iRacing opened its doors to the public in August, 2008, more than 12,000 real-world racing drivers and other motorsports enthusiasts, many of them SCCA members already, have joined the service.

Annual Waiver Hard Card

Introduction

SCCA requires that a release and waiver form be signed by all persons entering event premises that are not open to the general public. To improve the registration process and reduce paper work at a Region level, the SCCA has now adopted an Annual Waiver Program as described in the following sections. This is an OPTIONAL program for participants. The annual waiver program itself will be valid at ALL SCCA events. All other waiver procedures and requirements, as stated in the current Risk Management Release and Waiver Guidelines, remain in effect except if superseded by these procedures.

In addition, any region that has already established an annual waiver program, we ask that they adopt this program so that we have consistency in forms and recordkeeping. All original SCCA Annual Waiver forms will be kept on file with Member Services at the SCCA office in Topeka, KS.

Annual Waiver Form and Application

Beginning with January 2009 renewals members will have the opportunity to participate in an SCCA Annual Waiver program. Members holding a competition license or those that have worked at least two days in the previous year will, upon completion of the Annual Waiver Form, receive their Hard Card free of charge. Similar to the current Hard Card issuance, all other members will pay $10 and complete the Annual Waiver Form. Members can report their days worked via their log-in on scca.com.

To participate, members need to complete both sides of the Annual Waiver. The Annual Waiver must be witnessed by either a licensed registrar or notarized. Submit the signed and witnessed Annual Waiver to SCCA and the member will be issued a Photo ID Hard Card. An Annual Waiver will expire on the member’s renewal date. Annual Waiver Forms will be included in each member’s renewal package. From the SCCA website, members may also print the Annual Waiver in color, upload their photo and mail the completed annual waiver and appropriate fees to Member Services for processing.

We request that any member that is within three months of their membership expiration, pay their dues at the time when the Annual Waiver is submitted. This will help control costs in issuing multiple cards and signing multiple waivers.

Event Procedure

As the SCCA Annual Waiver only covers our events and processes, members may still be required to sign a separate waiver at some facilities as each venue has their own requirements.

Any member presenting a valid SCCA Photo ID Hard Card will not be required to sign the event waiver form. For regions with bar code scanners, the Hard Card can be scanned to collect the membership number. Members would not need to check in at registration unless additional event information was available or required.

For membership expiring in 2009, SCCA Hard Cards will be imprinted with a blue stripe with embedded expiration date for ease of identification. Memberships that expire in 2010 will have a red stripe. Subsequent years will have a different color stripe for differentiation. In any given calendar year, two colors may be valid, so it is imperative to verify the expiration date.

In the event that an Incident Report needs to be recorded at an event involving a member with an Annual Waiver, it will need to be noted on the Incident Report as “Annual Waiver on File”.

For driver’s that are placed on probation, your Annual Waiver Hard Card will be confiscated (per GCR 4.4.10.A) and the Probation Letter will indicate that you have an SCCA Annual Waiver on file.
