SCCA Board Rescinds National Club Racing Consolidation Plans TOPEKA, Kan. (June 6, 2008) – In a conference call Wednesday night, the Sports Car Club of America Board of Directors voted to rescind all planned consolidations that were announced following its May meeting. The Board cited considerable member input for its decision. The Board previously moved to direct its Club Racing Board to consolidate the C and D Sports Racing classes into one class and the Showroom Stock B cars into either Showroom Stock C or Touring 3 for 2009. Additionally, it had approved the CRB to combine for the 2010 season: Sports 2000 with C and D Sports Racing; GT-3 with either GT-Lite, D Prepared and/or GT-2 and B Production; F, G and H Production; ST and Touring 1; and Formula Atlantic (FA) and Formula 1000 (FB). All consolidations were rescinded following a substantial amount of member input and feedback from the May 21 Fastrack® News announcement. Additionally, due to the change in class structure plan, the Board rescinded its motion to have 23 races at the 2009 Runoffs and 21 in 2010. Runoffs eligibility will change in 2009, with only classes carrying an average of 2.5 cars or more per National race event from the previous year invited to compete at the event. A maximum of 24 races will be held at the 2009 Runoffs, with combined class races created if the number of eligible classes per the 2.5 rule exceeds 24. Consistent with this change, the existing 24-class limit for the Runoffs has been lifted. The Board stressed that only the class consolidations and the number of classes and races at the Runoffs were rescinded. The following items from the May Board of Directors minutes remain unaffected, including: Improved Touring remaining a Regional-only class with the CRB working to migrate cars to National classes as an option; raising the number of finishes required for Runoffs eligibility and the number of out-of-division races that may be counted; locking in the top 10 classes in participation for a stand alone race at the Runoffs; and establishing a Tuesday through Sunday Runoffs schedule. “Based on the member input we received following the release of the May Board minutes, it was clear that the path we had chosen for class consolidation was not supported across the membership,” SCCA Board of Directors Chairman R.J. Gordy said. “The Board strives to improve our activities for the membership, and receiving input is a critical part of the process. It is important to note that, while we have rescinded some of the items approved in May, many of the other items approved have gained considerable support and we are making positive progress. Full minutes from the June 4 Board of Directors meeting will be available in the July Fastrack News, which will be posted on or around June 20 at www.scca.com. SCCA Runoffs Moving to Road America in 2009
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 12, 2008) – Sports Car Club of America, Inc. announced today the results of a vote by its Board of Directors that will move the National Championship Runoffs® to Road America (Elkhart Lake, Wis.) in 2009. Road America will become the sixth venue to host the event, dating back to 1964. The Board directed its staff to move forward to negotiate a three-year agreement with Road America for SCCA Club Racing’s signature event, which has averaged over 650 participants since 2000. The Runoffs is currently in the final year of a three-year agreement at Heartland Park Topeka, in Topeka, Kan. “Given the deep history the track, the town of Elkhart Lake and SCCA enjoy, it only seems natural for the most prestigious Club Racing event in the world to be hosted by Road America,” SCCA President & CEO Jim Julow said. “The Board had a difficult decision, as we had an unprecedented number of outstanding potential hosts for the event, meaning the long term future of Club Racing’s National Championship is very bright.” “The SCCA has been an integral part of our 53 year-history,” Road America President and General Manager George Bruggenthies said. “The opportunity to showcase our facility and our community to a nation of SCCA racers and fans is a tremendous honor. On behalf of our board of directors and staff, my thanks to the SCCA for their confidence. We promise to build on the outstanding Runoffs tradition and exceed stakeholder expectations.” The first-ever “Interdivisional Championship,” later referred to as the “Runoffs,” was held at Riverside Raceway (Riverside, Calif.) in 1964, and alternated coasts with Daytona International Raceway (Daytona Beach, Fla.) through 1969. In 1970, the event began a 24-year run at Road Atlanta (Braselton, Ga.), before moving to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (Lexington, Ohio) in 1994. After 12 years in Ohio, the Runoffs moved to Heartland Park Topeka in 2006. The move after three years signifies a change in philosophy after such long runs at venues from the 1970s through the turn of the century. “Club Racing in the United States has evolved in the last decade, and rotating the Runoffs will do nothing but help the event and the Club Racing program, overall,” SCCA Chairman R.J. Gordy said. “This is by no means a reflection on the job that Raymond Irwin and his staff have done at Heartland Park Topeka,” Julow added. “In the last four years, they have met every challenge and request and built a tremendous facility that is worthy of potentially hosting not only the Runoffs, but other high-profile road racing events in the future. Additionally, the local community and business groups have been outstanding and we thank them for their continued support.” The event has grown in both size and stature over the years, with approximately 700 of the nation’s best amateur race drivers from across the country making the annual trek for the event that spans an entire week, preceded by additional days of optional testing. The sheer number of competitors makes the Runoffs the largest annual amateur road racing event in the world, and results in an average local economic impact approaching $10 million each year. The Runoffs annually crown the National Champions of SCCA Club Racing’s National level classes (currently 25) and has been referred to as the “Olympics” of motorsports. Drivers from across North America race locally to earn points, with the top-10 qualifying drivers from the nine SCCA Divisions in each class earning an invitation to compete in the event. The list of past Runoffs Champions is a who’s who in road racing history that includes Skip Barber, Michael Galati, Paul Newman, Bobby Rahal, Graham Rahal, Greg Ray, Boris Said and Scott Sharp. Road America’s history dates back to the early 1950s when public street races in the Elkhart Lake area were a part of the SCCA national championship series. When street racing became illegal in 1952, participants and supporters joined efforts and raised funds to develop Road America. The track held its first event, the SCCA National, on September 10-11, 1955. The inaugural June Sprints® was held the following year, June 23-24, 1956. Today, the 14-turn, 4.048-mile track holds its original configuration and continues to challenge the world’s best two- and four-wheel racers. The date for the 2009 event has yet to be finalized, although it will move from October to September. The 45th SCCA National Championship Runoffs will be held at Heartland Park Topeka October 6-12, 2008. As the weather has improved here in South Jersey, it’s been a big help for our construction efforts. Dry weather has enabled us to restart paving, which is critical both for infrastructure as well as for the racing surfaces. Additional support for this years F500 Challenge Cup event comes from Moore's Auto Sales, Towanda Pa and Quadrini Racing Enterprises Mamaroneck NY. Based on overwhelming driver response from last year race, event organizers Rudolph Brothers Racing and Schultz Racing expect double the number of F500 cars for this year‚s event. Last years event generated a huge amount of class interest and public exposure from the Class and NESCCA web sites, along with several mentions in Auto Area Racing News, a hardcore northeast racing publication, and Formula Car Magazine. Thanks to corporate and driver support the F500 Challenge Cup event put out a positive message for this "Fun, Fast Affordable" open wheel class. More importantly the race uniquely offers equal driver race contingency awards to both Regional Competition Licensed drivers and National Competition Licensed drivers. The Challenge Cup race is a great opportunity for any driver with a limited number of Regional starts or no more then two, current year, National races starts to be scored and rewarded separately from those drivers racing for National Points. Also the F500 Challenge Cup offers the diversity and economics of two races on two different tracks in one weekend, along with a chance to meet and socialize with other F500 drivers and crews. The F500 Challenge Cup is run in conjunction with the Finger Lakes Region, September Fun One Double at Watkins Glen International. Entry for the F500 Challenge Cup is automatic with entry into the Fun One Double. Is the Fun One Double itself a great event? You bet. The '07 Fun One Double drew over 350 entrants. Important to competitors, WGI offers acres of paved paddock parking, no hassle SUNOCO Race Fuel sales, plus dedicated paddock, grid workers, safety crews, and a newly constructed Media Center. The track is only minutes away from the historic village of Watkins Glen, birth place of U.S road racing. The area offers plenty of dinning and lodging possibilities. Listed among the village's rich racing history are the Racers Walk of Fame, The Glen Motor Inn, the Seneca Lodge Bar, and the International Racing Research Center, along with spectacular views of Lake Seneca. F500 drivers can put F500 Challenge Cup right up there with the Runoffs and the June Sprints. Be part of this great week end of racing! It was presented at the NEDiv Mini-Con in November of 2007. Although the details are based on running the Shootout at the Double National at Pocono, it is meant to be held at the last National in the Division wherever that would take place. Therefore, specifics such as number of laps would be different depending on the track used. Think about this proposal and be ready to talk about it at the NEDiv Roundtable which will be held in March. Please address any comments and questions to George Bloeser, Chairman, NESCCA Steering Committee, at indy33@aol.com or 610-965-0585. Continued Discussion Topic Background: Discussions took place at the 2006 NEDiv Mini-Convention and the 2007 NEDiv Roundtable concerning the need to revitalize the National Club Racing program in the Northeast Division so that it is viewed as an attractive, viable program for SCCA Nationally licensed drivers. There is a need to impart excitement to the program relative to the Northeast Division, so that it is not viewed only as a means for accumulating points to enable a driver to be invited to participate in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. NESCCA National Race participants are down in 2007 for the second year since our peak in 2005. Three of our traditional classes have significantly decreased participation with GT3 at 50%, FP at 45%, and FC at only 30% of 2005 levels. Concept: After much discussion during the 2007 racing season, I am making a proposal to bring new interest and excitement to the NESCCA National Racing program of the Northeast Division. It would essentially be an end-of-season special event for the top six drivers in each class based on the same point system as that used to determine the drivers invited to the SCCA Runoffs. This concept is similar to NASCAR’s “Chase” for determining their annual Champion, except that we would have only one event whose outcome would determine the NEDiv Champion in each of our car classes. Format: Name: NESCCA Shootout for the NEDiv Championship in National Club Racing, or in its Short form “The NESCCA Shootout.” Qualification: The top six finishers in class by points using the current point system, but only counting points accrued in NEDiv National races held prior to the last scheduled National in NEDiv, would be invited to participate in the Shootout. However, all National drivers could compete in the overall event to continue to accrue points for the SCCA Runoffs. Event: The last scheduled NEDiv National is currently, and has been for years, the Pocono Double National. It is recommended that this be our NEDiv Championship event and that we promote it as a “Super Event” with support from both NESCCA and the National Office. There would be a special ceremony at the conclusion of racing on Sunday to present the NEDiv Championship award. This would be in addition to the normal NESCCA Race Winner trophies and hats awarded each day. Race Groups: All viable (with active participation) car classes would be provided for, with race groups established as normal (speed differential and number of entries). Classes with three or more active drivers will be invited to participate in the Shootout. Day 1 (Friday): Qualifying for all entrants in each class will be held. A party for drivers, crews, and workers with beverages and snacks will be held at the end of the day. Day 2 (Saturday): Racing only (20 laps), with grids established by qualifying results from Friday. A dinner party for drivers, crews, and workers with musical entertainment will be held at the end of the day. Day 3 (Sunday): Racing only (20 laps) with grids established by finishing position in Saturday’s races. Ceremonies to crown the NEDiv Champions will be held at the end of the day including a party with beverages and snacks. A post-event party with recognition of the NEDiv Champions would enhance camaraderie between workers and drivers and keep the drivers on site until the conclusion of the entire event. Clarification: The NEDiv Champion in each class would be determined by a combination of finishing positions of the Shootout eligible drivers from Saturday’s and Sunday’s races. Ties would be broken by awarding the NEDiv class championship to the driver who had the highest number of NEDiv points prior to the “Super Event.” Blank NEDiv Champion trophies would be available for photos at the event ceremony with engraved trophies presented to the winners at the Fall NEDiv Mini-Convention. Conclusion: It is thought that a NESCCA Super Event of this type would enhance the interest in and excitement about the Northeast Division National Racing program and hold that interest through to the end of the season without interfering with our drivers’ accumulation of points for the SCCA Runoffs. George Bloeser, Chairman Northeast Division National Runoffs Champions Crowned in Topeka National drivers from the Northeast Division earned National Championships at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs® Pres. by AT&T at Heartland Park Topeka. Congratulations go out to the following class champions: FC - Charles Shafer - Van Diemaen RF00 - Washington DC Region FCM F500 Challenge Cup Wrap-Up Steve Moore, Towanda NY, driving an Invader QC-1 wins the FormulaCar Magazine F500 Challenge Cup, Presented by Hoosier. The two FCM F500 Challenge Cup races were held in conjunction with the Sports Car Club of America Finger Lakes Region Fun One Double at Watkins Glen International. Sixteen entrants, nine Regional and seven National drivers, enjoyed coolish fall weather. Each race saw fourteen of the sixteen entrants start. Some drivers missed one or both races, primarily due to the Glen's blue Armco barriers (ouch). Utilizing the motocross point scoring system, the top three FCM Cup finishers closed out the weekend with Moore leading with 355 points, Tom Shaughnessy second with 350 points, and Bob Gray third with 295. With event support from Hoosier Racing Tire, SUNOCO Race Fuels, and RHS Stainless, Cup winner Moore also received a set of Hoosier tires and a beautiful embroidered SUNOCO Izod shirt. Each day's top-five Regionally Licensed drivers and top-five Nationally Licensed drivers received Hoosier tires, Hoosier jackets, and embroidered SUNOCO Izod Shirts. Saturday's and Sunday's Regional and National pole qualifiers each received hand crafted RHS Stainless Wine Rack Pole Position awards which included wine glasses and a bottle of Lakewood Vineyards wine. At the Saturday afternoon F500 Class Social, drivers received discount coupons compliments of Lakewood Vineyards, Watkins Glen. Geoff Gerko, Garfield Heights, OH, won the drawing for a dinner certificate for two at the Glen Motor Inn's Montage Restaurant. Later Geoff said, "The food was great along with the view and the historical Glen racing pictures hanging on the restaurant walls." LATE BREAKING NEWS New England Region Club Racing relies on two-way radios for relaying all communications from flag stations to Race Control, and from Race Control to all medical, fire and rescue vehicles. Clear, continuous, uninterrupted functioning of these radios is imperative to ensure the safety of everyone on the track, from the drivers, to the flag marshals, to the rescue personnel. Radio interference delays dispatch of appropriate fire, medical and rescue personnel and endangers drivers as well as workers. More and more drivers are now using radios in their cars to communicate with their crews. What you, as a driver or crew member, may not realize is that NER is experiencing a great deal of interference from your radios. This interference prevents the transmission of essential communications to and from Race Control, and jeopardizes the safety of the race Race Teams: For the safety of racers and workers, PLEASE DO NOT USE THE FOLLOWING FREQUENCIES at any New England Region Club Racing event 151.625 - 151.655 - 151.715 - 151.895 - 152.700 - 154.515 - 154.570 - 154.600 Please check your radios to make sure you are not using one of these frequencies. If you are unsure about what frequency your radio is using, bring it to me and I will test it for you. This interference has become a big enough problem that it warrants our writing this notice as well as including an injunction against using these frequencies in the Supplemental Regulations for New England Region Events. The first priority is to have a safe event. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated by everyone who is involved in putting on an NER Club Racing event. Please, help us play safe! Thank you for your cooperation. Doug White New Weekend Membership Beginning August 1, 2007 a new Weekend Membership program will go into effect. The membership is good for one weekend and costs $15.
