HANS Device Troubled by Counterfeit Parts

November 13, 2009

A court-ordered discovery has shown that counterfeit HANS Device post anchors in IMPACT RACING Products' helmets is a more far-reaching issue than first thought. HANS Performance Products is continuing its free anchor replacement program both direct and through its authorized dealer network. Racing Radios has been servicing the NASCAR teams and leading support in NHRA comes from Simpson Performance Products. Simpson CEO Chuck Davies said, "Like the people at HANS, we take safety very seriously. Racers trust our products and we're proud our trackside services are able to help racers."

HANS CEO Mark Stiles added, "We didn't create this situation but it is vitally important that racers have full confidence in their HANS Device. We have always been impressed with Simpson Performance Products' commitment to safety and service. They have helped tremendously to minimize any concerns our customers may have."

HANS is encouraging all racers to make a special effort when they inspect their gear. Details of the replacement program, other information and program updates are available at hansdevice.com, by calling HANS direct at 1-888-HANS-999, or by contacting an authorized North American HANS factory trained dealer.

NEDIV Nationals Numbers for 2010

New info to all drivers who run NEDIV National Races
It is time once again to renew your preferred car number for 2010.
This year there are new race groups:

SRF
FA,FC,FM,S2,CSR,DSR,FE,FB
FV,F500,FF
GT1,GT2,GT3,STO,AS,T1, ST
SM,SSB,SSC,T2,T3
EP,FP,HP,GTL,STU

The rules for requesting a preferred a number are as follows:

  1. There is nothing "official" about the preferred number list and there is no charge. Note the word "preferred" does not mean "reserved". The assignment of car numbers at any race is at the discretion of the registrar for that race.
  2. Any disputes will be resolved at the sole discretion of the pointskeeper.
  3. If you harass the pointskeeper, you may be banned from the list.
  4. Number requests will be processed in the order they are received.
  5. Requests deemed unreasonable may be ignored at the sole discretion of the pointskeeper.
  6. You must provide three (3) different car number choices even if you are renewing your number from 2009.
  7. If you do not provide three choices and the requested number is not available (see below) then the first request will be ignored with regards to the order in which the requests are processed. (i.e. if you do not include 3 choices and you don't get your requested number, then "you go to the end of the longest line.")
  8. Include your full name and car class along with an e-mail address where you can be reached.
  9. Number requests will be accepted from anyone starting on November 1, 2009 and continuing through February 28, 2010.
  10. People who had a reserved number in a class for 2009 will have first preference on renewing that number in that class through December 31, 2009. All requests received on or after January 1st will be done of a "first come, first serve" basis regardless of having the number listed in 2009.
  11. Duplicate numbers will not be assigned in a race group under any condition.
  12. For 2010 there are new race groups based on the most often used race groups in 2009 NEDIV National races.
  13. This could mean that there will be conflicts for car numbers due to shifting groups.
  14. If there is a possible conflict, due to two or more people each having the same number listed in different groups the previous year, then the following rules will apply:
  15. All requests which may have a conflict will be held until January 1st.
  16. The driver that ran the most NEDIV National races will be given preference.
  17. If two drivers ran the same number of races, then the official points from 2009 will be used as a tie-breaker.
  18. On January 1, 2010 any number that has not been renewed is considered available.
  19. People who request a number that someone else had listed in 2009 will be required to wait until January 1st to receive that number.
  20. All number requests will be acknowledged. Confirmations will also be sent. If you do not receive a acknowledgment within seven days you should resend your request. E-mail does get lost and a typical year involves over 1,000 e-mails.
  21. Please send requests to Marianne Lyons at nediv.points@charter.net

For the racing,

Marianne

SCCA Board Approves All National Classes for Runoffs

fb

Credit: Mark Weber

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 19, 2009) – Sports Car Club of America’s Board of Directors voted on rule changes to eliminate set participation levels and regulations that, in the past, have prohibited certain National-level classes from competing at the National Championship Runoffs. The vote gives younger “incubator” classes an opportunity to be included in the Runoffs.

A total of 29 classes, up from 25 in 2009, will now be eligible for participation at the National Championship Runoffs, held Oct. 20-26 at Road America in 2010. As in 2009, the eligible classes will be scheduled into 24 separate race groups, with lower-subscribed classes being combined with a split start.

The new regulations also specify that a class must have a minimum of 10 Runoffs entries and qualified drivers in order to recognize its winner as a National Champion. In the event any class does not meet the minimum requirement at the Runoffs, it will compete at the event as a supplemental class, without National Championship recognition.

New classes eligible for Runoffs participation for the first time include Formula 1000 (FB), Super Touring Over (STO), Super Touring Under (STU) and ST. These classes were created in the last five years and have struggled to grow season participation numbers without the opportunity to attend the Runoffs.

“Throughout the last several years, the Board of Directors has toiled with the notion of a minimum level of participation for inclusion at the Runoffs,” Chairman R.J. Gordy said. “This is a progressive move forward, giving four classes the opportunity that had been missing to determine their long-term viability. It also removes the restraint on several classes that have been participating in the Runoffs, but struggling to stay above the participation level that had been set—most recently 2.5 cars per race throughout the season.”

For the first time in many years, the SCCA National Championship Runoffs held a combined-class race in 2009 for Showroom Stock B and Touring 3.

“The combined class race this year confirmed that Road America, as a venue, has the ability to successfully operate two classes together with a split start,” Gordy said. “This gives us an opportunity to include more racers without adversely affecting the event schedule.”

Classes eligible for the Runoffs are now: American Sedan, C Sports Racing, D Sports Racing, Sports 2000, Spec Racer Ford, E Production, F Production, H Production, Formula 1000, Formula 500, Formula Atlantic, Formula Continental, Formula Enterprises, Formula F, Formula Mazda, Formula Vee, GT-1, GT-2, GT-3, GT-Lite, Showroom Stock B, Showroom Stock C, Spec Miata, Super Touring O, Super Touring U, ST, Touring 1, Touring 2 and Touring 3.

SCCA Board Approves Noteworthy Club Racing Changes

ff

Credit: Mark Weber

TOPEKA, Kan. (Oct. 18, 2009) – The Sports Car Club of America Board of Directors made several noteworthy changes to the Club Racing program at its Oct. 16-18 meeting. In addition to its regular business conducted, changes were made regarding the Formula Ford class, minimum driver age, Showroom Stock vehicle age limits, Spec Miata tires and the classes eligible for the Runoffs.

Formula Ford

The Board of Directors approved the Club Racing Board recommendation to accept the 1.5-liter Honda Fit engine into the class, offering a modern, low-cost alternative to the venerable 1600cc Ford engines moving forward. The proper class name has also been shortened, simply to “Formula F” or “FF.”

The new engine is an addition, rather than a replacement. SCCA recognizes that many racers will retain the Ford engine configuration that has been used for 40 years. It is the intention of SCCA to maintain competitive parity between the powerplants for many years to come.

Minimum Driver Age

The Board approved a proposal to lower the minimum age requirement for participation in Club Racing to 15 years old on a conditional basis. Drivers must have previous racing experience (ie. karts, midgets, etc.) and must be pre-approved by their Divisional Licensing Representative. These drivers will be under strict scrutiny of event officials. Full details are requirements will be available in the December Fastrack News.

Showroom Stock Age Limits

The Board approved to extend the sunset rule in Showroom Stock from 10 years to 12 years, giving all cars an additional two years of eligibility beyond their year of production.

Spec Miata Tires

The Board approved language to complete the transition from the Toyo Proxes R888 to the Toyo Proxes RA-1 tire in National Spec Miata competition.

Beginning January 1, 2010, both tires will be eligible for National competition. On the third National race weekend in a respective Division, only the RA-1 will be permitted for dry and wet use. SCCA recognizes that race weekends may include multiple Nationally-sanctioned races.

Both tires will be available through normal Toyo Tires distribution methods.

National Championship Runoffs Classes

The Board made language changes to the General Competition Rules (GCR) to include all 29 National classes in the Runoffs beginning in 2010. It also set a minimum number of cars required at the Runoffs (10) to recognize a National Champion. A full story on the subject is available here: http://www.scca.com/newsarticle.aspx?news=3805.

Full details of all the business conducted at the October Board meeting will be available in the December 2009 Fastrack News, which will be available at SCCA.com Nov. 20.

Honda Performance Development, Inc. Launches Grassroots Motorsports Initiative
Will Develop Products, Services for Amateur, Lower-Level Professional Racers

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (July 24, 2009) – Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD), the authorized Honda and Acura auto racing company in North America, today announced a new automotive initiative targeted at expanding its presence in the grassroots motorsports market.

The broad-based initiative will include the development of products and services that support competition in the amateur and entry-level professional ranks, and will also include integrated marketing activities designed to raise the profile of Honda Racing and HPD.

“For many years, Honda enthusiasts have campaigned our products in racing series throughout the U.S.,” said Erik Berkman, President of Honda Performance Development. “On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Honda brand in the United States, we are pleased to announce that we will now support those efforts directly, by introducing products and services geared toward helping our customers fulfill their racing dreams.”

The new program will ultimately include an array of products and services for Honda and Acura customers who compete in amateur and professional racing. These products include both original equipment parts and racing-performance parts.

To launch its new grassroots initiative, HPD will operate the Honda Racing Line, a club targeted at licensed participants in amateur and entry-level professional racing. The Honda Racing Line will provide its members with a direct connection to Honda Performance Development and its unparalleled record of success at the pinnacle levels of motorsport.

This channel to factory support, which will offer Honda Racing Line members the opportunity to purchase racing-performance parts for expedited delivery, has not existed previously.

“Thousands of our customers are racing Hondas or Acuras today with a need for regular access to parts,” Berkman noted. “A market has clearly been established for a service like the Honda Racing Line. We are pleased to provide that service, and look forward to expanding the roster of benefits and services available to Honda Racing Line members.”

Competitors may register for the Honda Racing Line club and gain access to the parts catalogue through a website portal, HondaRacingLine.com. Additional Racing Line membership benefits will be announced as they are developed.

HPD’s new grassroots motorsports initiative also supports the fans of grassroots racing through an integrated marketing plan, focusing on fan identification with the Honda Racing brand through merchandise sales and additional services.

Specific details regarding other components of the new grassroots motorsports initiative will be announced throughout the year.

Honda Performance Development, Inc. (HPD) is the factory-authorized Honda and Acura racing company within North America. Founded in 1993, and located in Santa Clarita, Calif., HPD is the technical operations center for Honda and Acura’s high-performance racing cars and engines. In addition to its grassroots motorsports participation, HPD is the single engine supplier to the IndyCar Series and competes in prototype sports-car racing under the Acura banner in the American Le Mans Series.

National SCCA Spec Miata to Return to Toyo RA-1 Tire in 2010

TOPEKA, Kan. (June 11, 2009) – Sports Car Club of America announced today that the National Club Racing Spec Miata class will transition to the Toyo RA-1 tire in the 2010 season.

The class ran on the RA-1 tire from 2006 to 2008, but switched to the newer Proxes R888 tire for 2009. After receiving input from the Spec Miata racing community, both Toyo and SCCA management agreed that a change back was warranted.

“We received considerable input on the subject of Spec Miata tires this year and that input was taken very seriously by both SCCA and Toyo,” SCCA VP of Club Racing Terry Ozment said. “Toyo has been very receptive to this and will begin production of the RA-1 again for next year’s season.”

The complete transition process to the RA-1 will be determined and announced after the 2009 National Championship Runoffs®.

Important News On Minor Waivers

16 to 18 year old participants must have a waiver from Topeka to enter any hot area—not just drive the track, but also work a corner, ES, Grid, etc. Each region will declare the hot areas for the track for their event so be sure to check at Registration.

To obtain the waiver, contact SCCA membership and licensing for the forms and directions. Generally, these are “turned around” within a week, but as the season starts soon, now is the time to act.

Minor Participants: After years of telling drivers not to include minors as crew, the rule has changed for SPECTATOR events. In order for a minor to be covered by the SCCA insurance, they must be listed as minor participants. For those who use the NESCCA on-line registration system, there will be a place to put the names of minors in the same box as the crew names. Those who use other registration systems should check with the registrar on the process used. Workers will be asked to list their minor participants on a sign in sheet at Registration. Minors should have an annual waiver or an SCCA photo ID to be listed.

This year’s Annual Minor Waiver is lime green. Why don’t you contact your local Registrar now and get it taken care of before the season begins?!

Addition - 4/15/09

At SCCA SPECTATOR events, minors who are members of SCCA will be issued a Minor Waiver if they are listed as a Minor Participant on the Driver’s entry or with the Worker Registrar. This will make them eligible for the Participant Accident Member Medical Coverage. If the minor is not a member, they will not be issued a waiver and will be covered under the Spectator Liability coverage.

At NON-SPECTATOR events, all minors will be issued Minor Waivers. Please list the minor participants on the entry or with the worker registrar.

To ensure that your minor is covered, add them by changing to a Family Membership.

Are you ever bored at the racetrack but don’t want to stand in the sun or rain?
Do you wish that you could see the whole racetrack while the race is on?
Ever wonder what it is the Stewards and Control do up there in the Tower?

Here’s your chance to do something about all of that

BECOME A LOGGER!!!

A logger is a volunteer who works with the flag control operator and the Stewards in the Tower during qualifying sessions and the races. Their task is to write down all of the communication between the Tower and the corner workers. The information is used as evidence in any protest, evidence in any kind of injury (especially those requiring transport), tracking driver performance on the track, and becomes part of the official record of the event.

There is a form of shorthand used—easy to learn and very straightforward. The logger needs to be able to focus on what is coming in on the radio and what is being said in return. Example: Station 3 no flag, car 16 black, off track driver’s left and continued would look like: 3 NF 16blk dl @ cont. Takes a little practice, but not hard. (And there are always others around to give a hand if you miss something!

We are looking for teenagers, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, friends, buddies, sisters, brothers, neighbors—anyone who thinks they might like to sit in the Tower for a couple of hours to 2 full days, out of the weather (hot, cold and wet), see and hear the entire race, and learn a lot about our sport. You do not have to have a hot pass to go to the Tower. The only skills you need to bring are the ability to concentrate when others are talking and to write fairly fast.

If you are interested—even in just trying it out--please contact Terry Roberts at terryroberts@comcast.net or your regional Flagging and Communications Chief.

FOR THE FUN OF IT!

Annual Waiver - Updated 1/15/09

The SCCA has adopted an Annual Waiver Program. This is an OPTIONAL program. The annual waiver itself will be valid at ALL SCCA events.

Beginning with January 2009 renewals, members who hold a competition license or those that have worked at least two days in the previous year will, upon completion of the Annual Waiver Form and Hard Card Application, receive their Hard Card free of charge. If you do not match the above criteria, members will pay $10 and complete the Annual Waiver Form and Application.

To participate, members must complete the Annual Waiver Form which should in included with your renewal information. The Annual Waiver must be witnessed by either a licensed registrar or notarized. Submit the signed Annual Waiver and the Hard Card Application to SCCA and you will be issued a Photo ID Hard Card. The Annual Waiver will expire on the member's renewal date.

A few of hints:

-You will have to either send a picture (license size) with your application OR scan one in on line with the Hard Card Application OR if you already have one on file at SCCA, that can be used.

-The 2009 SCCA Hard Cards with the annual waiver will be imprinted with a red stripe with embedded expiration date for ease of identification. Future years the color will change.

-Workers will receive a vertical card; competition license holders a vertical card; members who hold both will receive the horizontal card.

-All licensing information will be on the back of the card.

-Members presenting valid SCCA Photo ID Hard Card with an Annual Waiver date will not be required to sign the event waiver form.

If you have any questions, contact your regional Chief of Registration or Terry Roberts, DA Registration, NEDIV (860) 678-8356.

Annual Waiver Update

The overall response and submission of Annual Waivers has been very positive. We have identified a couple of areas that need to be addressed.

First, the Annual Waiver must be witnessed by an SCCA Registrar or Notarized. No Exceptions. We have received a number of Annual Waivers without the appropriate signatures.

Second, due to the manner in which we receive mail and membership applications/renewals, please do not include pictures with the Annual Waiver. Instead, either email them to Member Services or better yet, upload them at ams.scca.com. Receiving pictures by standard mail increases the likelihood for errors, and delays processing as we have to scan and resize the photos. If you feel it absolutely necessary to send via mail, make sure to identify your name and membership number on the back of the photo.

Note: The following is a draft proposal. It was presented at the NEDiv Mini-Con in November of 2007. Although the details are based on running the Shootout at the Double National at Pocono, it is meant to be held at the last National in the Division wherever that would take place. Therefore, specifics such as number of laps would be different depending on the track used. Think about this proposal and be ready to talk about it at the NEDiv Roundtable which will be held in March. Please address any comments and questions to George Bloeser, Chairman, NESCCA Steering Committee, at indy33@aol.com or 610-965-0585.

Continued Discussion Topic
Proposed Enhancements to the NESCCA National Club Racing Program

Background: Discussions took place at the 2006 NEDiv Mini-Convention and the 2007 NEDiv Roundtable concerning the need to revitalize the National Club Racing program in the Northeast Division so that it is viewed as an attractive, viable program for SCCA Nationally licensed drivers. There is a need to impart excitement to the program relative to the Northeast Division, so that it is not viewed only as a means for accumulating points to enable a driver to be invited to participate in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. NESCCA National Race participants are down in 2007 for the second year since our peak in 2005. Three of our traditional classes have significantly decreased participation with GT3 at 50%, FP at 45%, and FC at only 30% of 2005 levels.

Concept: After much discussion during the 2007 racing season, I am making a proposal to bring new interest and excitement to the NESCCA National Racing program of the Northeast Division. It would essentially be an end-of-season special event for the top six drivers in each class based on the same point system as that used to determine the drivers invited to the SCCA Runoffs. This concept is similar to NASCAR’s “Chase” for determining their annual Champion, except that we would have only one event whose outcome would determine the NEDiv Champion in each of our car classes.

Format:

Name: NESCCA Shootout for the NEDiv Championship in National Club Racing, or in its Short form “The NESCCA Shootout.”

Qualification: The top six finishers in class by points using the current point system, but only counting points accrued in NEDiv National races held prior to the last scheduled National in NEDiv, would be invited to participate in the Shootout. However, all National drivers could compete in the overall event to continue to accrue points for the SCCA Runoffs.

Event: The last scheduled NEDiv National is currently, and has been for years, the Pocono Double National. It is recommended that this be our NEDiv Championship event and that we promote it as a “Super Event” with support from both NESCCA and the National Office. There would be a special ceremony at the conclusion of racing on Sunday to present the NEDiv Championship award. This would be in addition to the normal NESCCA Race Winner trophies and hats awarded each day.

Race Groups: All viable (with active participation) car classes would be provided for, with race groups established as normal (speed differential and number of entries). Classes with three or more active drivers will be invited to participate in the Shootout.

Day 1 (Friday): Qualifying for all entrants in each class will be held. A party for drivers, crews, and workers with beverages and snacks will be held at the end of the day.

Day 2 (Saturday): Racing only (20 laps), with grids established by qualifying results from Friday. A dinner party for drivers, crews, and workers with musical entertainment will be held at the end of the day.

Day 3 (Sunday): Racing only (20 laps) with grids established by finishing position in Saturday’s races. Ceremonies to crown the NEDiv Champions will be held at the end of the day including a party with beverages and snacks. A post-event party with recognition of the NEDiv Champions would enhance camaraderie between workers and drivers and keep the drivers on site until the conclusion of the entire event.

Clarification: The NEDiv Champion in each class would be determined by a combination of finishing positions of the Shootout eligible drivers from Saturday’s and Sunday’s races. Ties would be broken by awarding the NEDiv class championship to the driver who had the highest number of NEDiv points prior to the “Super Event.” Blank NEDiv Champion trophies would be available for photos at the event ceremony with engraved trophies presented to the winners at the Fall NEDiv Mini-Convention.

Conclusion: It is thought that a NESCCA Super Event of this type would enhance the interest in and excitement about the Northeast Division National Racing program and hold that interest through to the end of the season without interfering with our drivers’ accumulation of points for the SCCA Runoffs.

George Bloeser, Chairman
NESCCA Steering Committee

Important Announcement for AMB Customers

Dear Valued AMB Customer:

It has come to our attention that some customers are using abrasive detergents, high-pressure hoses, or even submersion in an effort to clean their transponders after use. Doing so can result in degradation of the transponder's circuitry and overall performance, and damage resulting from these practices will not be covered under warranty.

AMB transponders are designed to perform at an extremely high level in typical motor sports environments. However, they are still susceptible to damage when handled improperly. AMB recommends gently washing your transponders with clean tap water and allowing them to fully dry before attempting to charge them.

If you have any questions or would like further clarification on the proper cleaning and treatment of your AMB transponders, please feel free to contact us by phone or via email, or visit AMB's support site for more information

Drivers & Crew: Ensure Safe Race Communications - Check Your Radios

New England Region Club Racing relies on two-way radios for relaying all communications from flag stations to Race Control, and from Race Control to all medical, fire and rescue vehicles. Clear, continuous, uninterrupted functioning of these radios is imperative to ensure the safety of everyone on the track, from the drivers, to the flag marshals, to the rescue personnel. Radio interference delays dispatch of appropriate fire, medical and rescue personnel and endangers drivers as well as workers.

More and more drivers are now using radios in their cars to communicate with their crews. What you, as a driver or crew member, may not realize is that NER is experiencing a great deal of interference from your radios. This interference prevents the transmission of essential communications to and from Race Control, and jeopardizes the safety of the race

Race Teams: For the safety of racers and workers, PLEASE DO NOT USE THE FOLLOWING FREQUENCIES at any New England Region Club Racing event

151.625 - 151.655 - 151.715 - 151.895 - 152.700 - 154.515 - 154.570 - 154.600

Please check your radios to make sure you are not using one of these frequencies. If you are unsure about what frequency your radio is using, bring it to me and I will test it for you.

This interference has become a big enough problem that it warrants our writing this notice as well as including an injunction against using these frequencies in the Supplemental Regulations for New England Region Events.

The first priority is to have a safe event. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated by everyone who is involved in putting on an NER Club Racing event. Please, help us play safe!

Thank you for your cooperation.
